Eagers Automotive, an Australian automotive retailer, revealed that an investigation into a cyber incident last week determined unauthorized access by a third party to segments of the company’s IT systems, leading to data retrieval from its servers.
According to a company statement, Eagers Automotive is currently in the process of notifying a limited number of individuals who have been identified as facing a significant risk of data misuse as a result of the breach. However, the exact number of affected individuals has not been disclosed.
The cyber incident adds to the growing trend of cybersecurity breaches affecting Australian corporations, prompting the government to initiate reforms in cybersecurity regulations. Earlier this year, Australia established an agency to oversee government investments and coordinate responses to cyber attacks.
Eagers Automotive had previously reported the cyber incident, which impacted certain IT systems, disrupting the finalization of transactions for specific new vehicles that were sold and ready for delivery. Despite this disruption, the company stated that the incident’s financial impact for the 2023 fiscal year is not anticipated to be significant.
