The Australian Department of Defence has allocated a combined AU$1.75m ($1.2m) from its Next Generation Technologies Fund (NGTF) to two universities to assist in developing its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
The University of South Australia and Deakin University will work on the second phase of the Defence Artificial Intelligence Research Network (DAIRNet), with UniSA developing a statistical machine learning algorithm to detect infection in humans using smartwatch data, including following inoculations.
Deakin will apply machine learning to create models to handle “multi-source, multi-modal, irregularly timed” data spanning extended periods, according to a Defence statement. The wider project aims to utilise AI to extract intelligence from complex data that will help with decision-making, said Defence.
