Deepseek: How Australia is Responding to the New Chatbot

The Chinese company released its AI chatbot on the app store and has completely changed the AI industry. The app Deepseek is downloaded more than the OpenAI chatbot. The app is taking over other companies, including Nvidia, in the stock market. Meanwhile, there is a mixed response from the Australian government, businesses, and policymakers. Some businesses welcomed the Chinese AI app while others discouraged using it because of security risks.

Meanwhile, the federal government recommends caution for users. Deepseek signals a new industry shift. According to the Guardian, Telstra is in a rigorous process of adopting new AI technology. The spokesperson said that they follow guidelines on the use of AI tools. Regarding Deepseek, they have not approved or even encouraged the employees to use the Chinese App. However, they have not officially blocked the application.

Indeed, companies are seeking advice from the government on using the new Chinese application. Since there is much debate about the risk of using Chinese Apps. Recently, TikTok has been banned, and Huawei has been in talks for a while for security concerns. Australian Cyber Security company CyberCx has advised government employees, businesses and workers to not give access to deep seek-on work devices amid security concerns.

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute strongly criticizes Chinese products and is concerned about the current approach to responding to new tech development. According to the Guardian, the company believes there must be one tech strategy covering AI that includes investing in sovereign AI capabilities.

Other companies believe that it is too early to take any action. We need to understand whether Deepseek is a security risk or not. Deepseek has achieved a place in less time and is providing sustainable solutions that save energy. Many believe Australia can get inspiration and hire university graduates to work on AI for future progress.
