NBN Co is considering expanding its satellite mobility service, currently offered to airlines flying within Australia, to international carriers as they enter Australian airspace.
The potential expansion of the large passenger commercial aircraft (LPCA) product was recently flagged by the network operator. LPCA is considered one of NBN’s most externally competitive products.
NBN Co aims to enhance LPCA to offer fleet plans and support for international airlines. The company will refine and evaluate the expansion proposal based on feedback before workshopping a more developed idea with the industry in June.
LPCA was trialed by Qantas for domestic inflight wi-fi services in 2016, and the airline recently expressed its interest in bringing wi-fi services to its international flights.
