CSIRO to Replace Core Enterprise Systems, Including SAP ERP, by 2027

CSIRO plans to replace its main computer systems by 2027. These systems include a SAP-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) and an in-house business pipeline and research management system. The agency has started a program called “enterprise services transformation” (EST) for this replacement.

The EST program has completed the first phase of planning, with some initial cost estimates and technology decisions. CSIRO will stick with SAP for its ERP but move away from the older and heavily customized version to a newer one, possibly S/4 HANA. As for the business pipeline and research management system, which is built in-house, the underlying platform is Microsoft Dynamics.

CSIRO aims to begin the procurement process for the new core systems in the second half of 2023. The current systems were designed over 15 years ago and have undergone multiple modifications to keep up with changes in the industry and government. However, they are now outdated and costly to maintain due to extensive customization.

Several factors influenced the timing of the EST program, including changing expectations and ways of working, as well as the upcoming end of support for the current SAP system in 2027.

The agency believes that the new core systems will be more efficient and enable better management of research and development activities, offering real-time financial insights, improved project management, and faster reporting on research outcomes.
