Citizen of the Year John Ng is the Finance Broker putting the E into Ethics and Education

Finance Broker

Accessing financial services can be a tedious effort. You need financial organisations with the network to provide your service, but you also need to be able to trust them with your money. Will these institutions actually work with your best interests in mind, or will they push products onto you that line their own pockets? Is it possible to find a finance broker that puts you first?

It’s important to work with lenders that value your interests when your financial future is at stake, and finance broker John Ng, founder of Money Jar Concept has built his entire business on the foundation upholding ethics, providing expert service that beats the banks, and developing financial literacy in his clients.

‘Your favourite Bald & Bespectacled broker’ – as John has called himself, migrated to Australia from Singapore in 2005, seeking more opportunities and a chance to pursue his passion for communications.

He graduated from uni with a Bachelors in Communication majoring in Journalism, but found himself working a temp call centre job at a bank due to the fact that his permanent residency application still hadn’t finished processing. John worked his way up the ladder in NAB, realising that he gelled well with the finance sector, but eventually began to disagree with the predatory practices of the big banks and resigned, feeling burnt out.

When John left his job at NAB he decided to pursue mortgage brokering seeking a more flexible lifestyle and the ability to provide a much needed service but on his own terms. He signed up to a larger franchise to learn the ropes in the market, before eventually leaving and building his own business. Alongside his career in finance, John kept up his passion for media and communications, creating community social media pages that captured the lifestyle, stories and culture of the local community’s members in inner-west Melbourne.

In 2017, Money Jar Concept was born from John’s desire to merge his two passions, Finance and Communications. Money Jar Concept became John’s vehicle to share everything he’d learned in the finance sector with the communities he engaged with, providing an ethical and educational service that empowered small business owners and motivated entrepreneurs to succeed with their financial endeavours. “Being a Journalism grad, I wanted to focus on communicating and articulating finance in a simple format for the benefit of everyone.” John explained, “As news is all about learning, informing and communicating, I put a major emphasis in the education aspect of my services.”

In 2020 John was voted Citizen of the Year by the Maribyrnong City Council for his efforts within the community, and Money Jar Concept has been proudly supporting the Refugee Migrant Children Centre (RMCC) for the past six months, donating a portion of their turnover every quarter. “RMCC does a lot of great work for the children in their program, and as a first generation migrant myself, I understand the cultural challenges that migrants can face.”
