Challenges Ahead: Brisbane Braces for Influx of 1.5 Million New Residents in 20 Years

Brisbane is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most vibrant and appealing cities, known for its stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and growing job opportunities. However, this sunny Queensland metropolis is currently grappling with some serious growing pains as it prepares to welcome a massive influx of Australians from other states.

According to a report by RSM Australia for Brisbane City Council, an extra 1.5 million people are expected to call Brisbane home over the next two decades, with 350,000 of them set to arrive by 2032.

While this surge in population may bring undeniable benefits to the city, it also poses significant challenges to its housing and infrastructure.

The impending demographic shift raises several critical concerns, primarily centered around housing affordability and availability.

As more and more people flock to Brisbane in search of better opportunities, the demand for housing is set to skyrocket. This increased demand can drive up property prices, making it increasingly difficult for both newcomers and current residents to secure affordable housing.

This, in turn, could exacerbate issues related to homelessness and housing inequality if not addressed proactively.

According to Steve Healey, the managing partner at RSM, the task of handling this unparalleled growth is not to be taken lightly.

He remarked, “In a way, it’s akin to the city transitioning from its youthful days to a more mature phase within just a decade.” He further noted that while the city’s core identity remains unchanged, the potential for experiencing significant challenges during this accelerated maturation process is substantial.

Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a situation where we cannot afford to halt the city’s progression as it rapidly matures.
