Mathews George has assumed the role of Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Cancer Council NSW. He replaced Frances Waterford who stepped down after four and a half years.George brings a wealth of experience in IT leadership, having held senior positions in both for-profit and non-profit organizations. He is known for his ability to deliver business value through strategic technology transformation.
In his new role, George will oversee IT leadership for NSW, encompassing strategy, priorities, risk mitigation, cybersecurity, and digital transformation. He will also lead the IT business unit. His responsiblilities includes managing Cancer Council NSW’s IT services, security and infrastructure, and application development and delivery.
George reports to Greg Bisset, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Cancer Council NSW. Bisset has praised George’s proven track record and his commitment to customer-centricity.George’s previous role was as CIO at The Smith Family, where he played a pivotal role in expanding the organization’s Learning for Life program, which supports disadvantaged children and young people with their education.
He credits his success at The Smith Family to building a high-performing team that embraced a customer-first culture and transitioned from “doing agile” to “being agile.”George also highlighted the implementation of a modern IT operating model, the development of a Microsoft-first cloud strategy, and the simplification of the technology architecture as significant achievements during his tenure.
As he embarks on his new chapter at Cancer Council NSW, George is guided by the belief that “if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together.”
Minu Ganesh has taken over as acting CIO at The Smith Family following George’s departure. Ganesh brings five years of experience as Data Platform Manager, spearheading the organization’s data modernization program.
