California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has digitized 42 million car titles using blockchain technology. The digitalization will help to detect fraud and streamline the title transfer process. Department of Motor Vehicle and its technology partners exclusively told Reuters.
The project is in collaboration with tech company Oxhead Alpha and Ava Labs’ Avalanche blockchain. It will enable over 39 million California residents to claim their vehicle titles through a mobile app. This marked the first such initiative in the United States.
Digitizing car titles will reduce the need for in-person DMV visits. It serves as a deterrent against lien fraud. Blockchain technology can help detect lien fraud by creating a transparent and unalterable record of property ownership. The process will make fraudulent activity difficult to hide.
Ava Labs’ president, John Wu, indicated that the initial stage was to produce 42 million titles as tokens on the Avalanche network. They are currently developing a mobile wallet that consumers can download to their phones.
California residents will have access to their digital auto titles beginning early next year. The DMV develops the app and infrastructure required for customer access.
