Bank of Queensland (BOQ) and Jetstar, two prominent Australian companies, experienced service disruptions due to an Azure cloud outage in Australia. BOQ faced issues with its mobile app and transaction processing, which began on Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday morning.
The recovery process took longer than anticipated, with full service restoration confirmed later in the day. While BOQ did not explicitly name Azure as the cause of the issue, it is believed that the bank was impacted by the data center outage affecting Azure’s Australia East region.
Jetstar also encountered problems with its website during the same timeframe, affecting customer bookings and flight check-ins. Passengers at airports reported difficulties with onboarding systems. Jetstar attributed the disruption to an “IT issue,” which was reportedly related to the Azure outage.
Microsoft acknowledged the problems with its Australia East region, which started with a utility power surge, causing a subset of cooling units to go offline in one data center. To prevent hardware damage, some compute and storage units were powered down, impacting various downstream services. While Microsoft had recovered most of its services, some individual downstream services, including those of customers, were still experiencing issues.
The Azure outage also appeared to be responsible for an outage of SAP’s cloud-based HR software, SuccessFactors, in Australia.
