Bali has long been a popular holiday destination for Australians, with its stunning beaches and laid-back atmosphere. However, the island is now facing a crackdown on bad behaviour that could mean the end of its carefree days.
Bali Governor Wayan Koster has been pushing for national authorities to ban all foreigners from hiring motorbikes, with the aim of ensuring quality and dignified tourism. Koster believes that the influx of tourists, many of whom are partying, has led to a decline in the quality of the island and its culture.
The move follows a campaign targeting tourists who wear skimpy clothing and a ‘bonk ban’ being announced. The ban, which targets public displays of affection, is an effort to maintain cultural respect and dignity on the island.
Indonesian authorities have been striving to reduce unruly behaviour for a few years, and last week the Bali Tourism Board posted to social media, with the headline “Enjoying Bali?”, in an effort to further crack down on bad behaviour. This may come as a surprise to some.
For everyone’s safety, comfort, and mutual respect, it is requested that tourists follow some common sense rules in order to show respect for the rich culture. To further emphasize this, a list of polite reminders is provided.
