Amazon Web Services (AWS) has proposed the establishment of a national advisory group to assess and continuously review the use of generative AI in the Australian education system.
In response to a senate inquiry focusing on AI’s integration into education, AWS suggested examining teaching, learning methods, and assessment practices in relation to emerging technologies.
The proposal includes the formation of an advisory group, convening quarterly to discuss identified challenges and benefits of AI technology. This group would be co-chaired by delegates from the federal Department of Education and the National AI Centre’s Responsible AI Network, and would comprise representatives from various education systems, sectors, and industry partners, including researchers, technology companies, and edutech firms.
The group’s responsibilities would involve reviewing insights and innovations in the AI field, analyzing use cases within the Australian education sector and international educational service providers, and providing thoughtful guidance on addressing potential benefits and challenges associated with emerging AI and generative AI technologies.
Moreover, the advisory group would oversee the development of “best practices” to effectively harness the potential of AI in the Australian education sector.
The submission by AWS also emphasized the importance of technology-neutral consumer protections and appropriate sector-specific regulations to ensure the public’s safety and the fulfillment of missions by relevant agencies.
In addition, the company suggested adopting risk-based AI governance practices and collaborating with the tertiary education sector and industry partners to design and deliver digital literacy and technology competency training.
