Australia’s National Gallery to Return Stolen Statues to Cambodia

Australia’s National Gallery has decided to return three ancient statues, believed to be stolen from Cambodia and illegally sold, to their rightful homeland. These statues are the latest artifacts being repatriated to Cambodia, following the return of several pieces from museums and collections across the United States last year.

The three bronze sculptures, known as Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara Padmapani and attendants, were purchased by the National Gallery of Australia from the British antiquities dealer Douglas Latchford in 2011 for $1.5 million. Latchford was indicted in the United States in 2019 on charges of wire fraud conspiracy and other crimes related to dealing in stolen objects, but he passed away before standing trial.

It was discovered that Latchford falsified records to claim that the relics were legitimately acquired when they were actually looted from temples and other sites in Cambodia and smuggled across borders. The National Gallery of Australia began investigating the statues’ true provenance when Latchford’s involvement in the illegal antiquities trade was convincingly implicated.

The repatriation ceremony was considered a significant step in rectifying past injustices, with the Cambodian ambassador to Australia expressing gratitude for the return of these culturally significant sculptures. The statues will be on display at the National Gallery of Australia for three more years while arrangements are made to house them in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, in agreement with Cambodia.

This case reflects a growing focus in the museum industry on assessing the provenance of valuable cultural items from other countries and conducting due diligence to ensure that artifacts are legitimately acquired. The art world has seen a transformation in this regard over the past two decades, with public collecting institutions prioritizing research and ethical considerations in their acquisitions.
