Australian Unity has successfully implemented seven AI use cases out of 78 identified opportunities for various types of artificial intelligence technology. Craig Rowlands, the General Manager of Data and Analytics, spoke at the Gartner Data & Analytics Summit, explaining that the company, which operates in banking, financial advice, retirement living, and private health insurance, traditionally takes a cautious approach to AI due to its risk-averse nature.
The company usually starts with in-house development to ensure solutions are powerful before sharing them with members and customers. Currently, there are 78 AI use cases in their ‘funnel,’ with seven actively delivering value. The rest are at various stages of development, from business case conception to minimum viable product (MVP) and progressing towards production.
One significant AI use case involves a machine learning-based tool from BigID. This tool scans the organization’s environment for sensitive data and has identified personally identifiable information, health data, financial data, commercially sensitive data, and intellectual property in the company’s storage repositories.
Rowlands mentioned that BigID helps organizations locate sensitive data in both primary systems and data copies. Recently, the tool identified sensitive information in a new folder on a shared drive, allowing the organization to address the issue.
The tool has also been valuable in managing different data management and lifecycle rules across the company’s operations. For example, the retention policies for health insurance differ from those for wealth management.
