Australian Police Seize $140m Heroin Shipment in Melbourne

Australia- the police seize 450kg of heroin hidden in the shipment of tiles in Melbourne. Malaysian national charged for the drug hidden in containers.

Australian authorities inspected the container which was sent from Malaysia to Melbourne. During the inspection, they found that it’s the largest shipment ever containing drugs.

According to sources, the authorities have found 1,290 packages. That contains heroin within the container. The Australian Authority also says that the packages had unique red branding.

Investigation of the case

On Friday, the investigators removed the heroin from the container.  The consignment is deliver to an industrial area near Melbourne’s airport. Before the delivery, the police raided the business and residential premises.

Krissy Barrett an AFP’s acting assistant commissioner Southern Command said,

It is common for drug traffickers to add other substances to heroin to increase the volume and therefore make bigger profits.’’

‘’ This involves manufacturing heroin with industrial, toxic chemicals that remain in the end product.’’

‘’ Anything from paracetamol to poisons can be added so you will never know what you are ingesting, or how your body will react. Unfortunately for many users, their bodies shut down and they die.’’

Moreover, the police kept the names of the arrested man hidden, which is a typical practice in Australia. Unless the police deem the identification of the suspect in the interest of the public and the victim’s family.

The police said that the maximum penalty for the possession of commercial quantity border-controlled drugs is life imprisonment.

Barret added, ‘’ We continue to work together in identifying and disrupting transnational organized crime syndicates that seek to harm both our nations and generate millions of dollars of profits from criminal activity.’’

Many believe that the police saved many lives by catching this huge drug delivery. According to Police the capture of the heroin save 225 lives, based on the estimates that there was one death in the Australian community for approximately every two kilograms of heroin consume.

According to The Guardian, the arrested Malaysian man faced the Melbourne magistrate’s court on Friday. It has been remanded in custody to the next appearance in the court in January 2022.

Australian police are working with the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) on this case and the investigation will continue until it is resolve. Also, it is too early to say anything about the whole case. But the police was appreciate for the arrest of the man.
