The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) is looking to hire a digital transformation director who will play a key role in expanding the monitoring of the gas and electricity sector. By utilizing data and enhancing digital capabilities, the AER aims to regulate the market more effectively and efficiently.
The digital transformation director will join the AER’s IT and data governance branch and report to Hrishikesh Desai, the chief data strategist responsible for implementing the AER’s data strategy. The main responsibility of the new director will be to develop and implement a digital transformation program for the AER.
The program’s objective is to modernize the AER’s ICT and data systems by investing in secure and scalable digital capabilities. This transformation will enable the AER to enhance its monitoring and regulatory functions in the market.
This appointment is part of the AER’s ongoing investment in its ICT and data strategies, which have contributed to increased compliance actions. The regulator’s recent corporate plan highlights the benefits of their data strategy, including improved systemization and reduced potential for human error, with a focus on enhancing market surveillance capabilities.
Facilitate streamlined information exchange between electricity network and gas pipeline businesses
The AER plans to seek funding for improving data handling, storage, and utilization through the implementation of their data strategy, as stated in their 2021-22 corporate plan.
To make better use of industry data, the AER is also preparing to launch a web-based platform by December 2024. This platform will facilitate streamlined information exchange between electricity network and gas pipeline businesses. The regulator has sought feedback from these sectors and presented case studies on existing technology platforms for data and information exchange.
The proposed “future technology platforms” project includes data validation, quality checks, and centrally stored network data with applied data governance and management principles.
In the past year, the AER has made progress in streamlining compliance reporting for the distribution and transmission sector. For instance, they have encouraged electricity network businesses to use a portal for submitting their annual regulatory information notices (RIN). This portal enables automated data collection and analysis, saving businesses millions of dollars and hundreds of hours previously spent on fulfilling reporting obligations through Excel spreadsheets.
