Australian banking giant Westpac pays out overcharging dead people. Also, the Bank admitted to breaking the law. Almost six lawsuits by regulators were filed over its poor treatment of customers. Which includes charging fees to dead people. According to BBC, it will pay $81m ((A$113m; £61m) in penalties, after court approval.
Australian Securities and Investment Commission
The Australian Securities and Investment Commission said that Westpac needs urgent improvement in its‘’ poor compliance culture.’’
ASIC Deputy Chair Sara court said, ‘’ The conduct and breaches alleged in these proceedings caused widespread consumer harm and ranged across Westpac’s everyday banking, financial advice, superannuation, and insurance business.’’
Moreover, ASIC, Australian Corporate Watchdog said, almost six investigations found the bank had charged more than $7m in fees over ten years. Which includes more than 11000 ‘’deceased customers for financial advice services that were not provided due to their death. ‘’
Furthermore, the bank duplicates the insurance policies of more than 7000 customers. 25000 customers were charged more than $5m in fees that had not been disclosed adequately.
Westpac Chief Executive Response
Though, In a statement, Westpac Chief Executive Peter King said, ‘’ the issues raised in these matters should not have occurred, and our processes, system, and monitoring should have been better. We are putting things right and unreservedly apologies to our customers.’’
Additionally, Last year in September Westpac was charge with a record $930m fine for the country’s biggest breach of money laundering laws. After the money laundering scandal, Chief executive Brian Hartzer stepped down from his position.
Also, in 2029 national inquiry to Australia’s scandal–plagued financial sector propose changes in the industry. These scandals shook the confidence of the public in Australia’s largest industry. That needs to be resolve.
