Australia to Develop Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub with $100 Million Investment

The Albanese and Malinauskas Governments have finalized a grant agreement to develop the Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub near Whyalla. This initiative aims to create regional jobs and bring Australia closer to becoming a renewable energy superpower. The governments are jointly investing $100 million to develop infrastructure at Port Bonython, preparing it to become South Australia’s first large-scale export terminal for hydrogen.

Along with private sector funding, the redeveloped Port Bonython is expected to host projects worth up to $13 billion and generate as much as 1.8 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030.

Details:

  • Australia is investing in the Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub to boost regional employment and progress toward a renewable energy powerhouse.
  • Both the federal and South Australian governments are contributing $100 million to develop hydrogen infrastructure at Port Bonython, making it South Australia’s primary large-scale hydrogen export terminal.
  • The redeveloped Port Bonython is expected to accommodate projects valued at up to $13 billion and produce around 1.8 million tonnes of hydrogen by 2030.
  • South Australia, with ample land, abundant solar and wind resources, is poised to become a world-class, low-cost hydrogen supplier.
  • The SA Government has outlined a comprehensive plan for the hydrogen industry in the Spencer Gulf, including a hydrogen electrolyser, power station, and storage facility.
  • The Australian Government has a vision to establish a clean, innovative, safe, and competitive hydrogen industry that benefits all Australians.
  • The Commonwealth Budget has allocated $2 billion for a new Hydrogen Headstart program to accelerate the development of Australia’s renewable hydrogen industry.

By 2050, Australia’s hydrogen industry is projected to contribute an additional $50 billion to GDP and create over 16,000 jobs in regional Australia. An additional 13,000 jobs are expected during the construction of renewable energy infrastructure to power hydrogen production.

The grant agreement between the Albanese and Malinauskas Governments signifies a significant step towards establishing the Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub and accelerating Australia’s position as a renewable energy leader. This initiative not only supports regional employment but also aligns with the global shift towards clean energy and decarbonization.
