Australia Post has adopted computer vision technology as a safety measure at its facilities to detect team members entering “unsafe zones.” Gary Starr, Executive General Manager of Parcel, Post, and Ecommerce Services, revealed that the initiative uses machine learning and computer vision technology supported by Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
With a workforce of nearly 30,000 individuals spread across various facilities, Australia Post has invested significantly in safeguarding its employees. The delivery network involves working with machinery like forklifts, large metal parcels cages, sorting machines, and trucks, posing potential risks.
Through Google’s technology, the company has trained its cameras using machine learning algorithms to monitor team movements and safety at these operational facilities. The cameras can now identify if any team member enters an unsafe area, immediately alerting management about the breach. This allows Australia Post to take prompt action to ensure the safety of its teams.
The data collected from the cameras is utilized as coaching opportunities for team members and to foster a safety-oriented culture within the organization. The implementation of computer vision technology has resulted in a significant reduction in workplace hazards and increased safety for employees.
By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Australia Post aims to create a safer working environment and protect its workforce from potential dangers associated with their day-to-day operations at the facilities.
