SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA – In a significant move to strengthen cybersecurity in the Pacific region, Australia has announced a $42.9 million investment. This funding will be used to establish “rapid assistance” teams to respond to cyber crises and identify cyber vulnerabilities in Pacific Island nations.
The Australian government’s commitment to enhancing cybersecurity in the Pacific comes amidst growing concerns about cyber threats in the region. Last year, Vanuatu’s government, hospitals, and courts were locked out of their computer systems and email for weeks by a cyberattack. This incident highlighted the need for stronger cybersecurity measures in the Pacific Islands.
To address this need, Australia will allocate $26.2 million to establish “rapid assistance” teams. These teams will be deployed to Pacific Island nations that have been affected by cyberattacks, providing critical support and expertise in incident response and recovery.
Additionally, Australia will invest $16.7 million to identify and assess cyber vulnerabilities in Pacific Island nations. This initiative will involve conducting vulnerability assessments, providing cybersecurity training, and developing risk mitigation strategies.
The Australian government’s commitment to cybersecurity in the Pacific is further reinforced by its partnership with the United States to fund two new undersea cables. These cables, which will be rolled out by Google, will significantly improve connectivity for eight remote Pacific Island countries.
“This investment will build long-term resilience in the Pacific and provide critical support to our Pacific partners in the face of growing cyber threats,” stated Pat Conroy, Australia’s Minister for the Pacific.
