Aussies Warned of Scammers Hiding in Google Search Results

Australia’s scam watchdog, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) Scamwatch, has issued a concerning warning about scammers potentially using Google search results to deceive unsuspecting Australians.

Scamwatch urged the public to remain vigilant against scammers impersonating well-known websites and brands that may appear in Google search results. The watchdog revealed that scammers could go to the extent of paying for Google ads, meaning their fraudulent schemes might even be lurking within the sponsored links at the top of search result pages.

A significant threat posed by such scams is the loss of money. Aussies have already fallen victim to online shopping scams, losing $3.7 million this year and over $9.2 million in 2022.

The scam websites set up by fraudsters often mimic legitimate brands and offer products that seem enticingly cheap. They may sell through their own fake websites, clone popular stores, or use social media profiles and legitimate platforms like Amazon to dupe consumers.

To protect themselves, Scamwatch advised Australians to closely examine website URLs for red flags, such as multiple dashes or symbols in the domain name, domains imitating reputable businesses (e.g., “Ap9le”), and Australian businesses using domains that don’t end in “.com” or “.com.au.”

Another crucial tip offered by Scamwatch is to check the contact page of a website. If no contact information is provided, it could be a strong indication that the website is a scam.

As scammers become more sophisticated in their techniques, it’s essential for consumers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid falling victim to online scams.
