Aussie Green Hydrogen Giant Teams Up with Swiss Firm to Build Major Italian Plant

Australian renewable energy developer Infinite Green Energy (IGE) has announced a partnership with Swiss energy giant Axpo to build one of Italy’s biggest commercial-scale green hydrogen plants. This exciting project marks a significant step forward in Italy’s “Hydrogen Valley” strategy and the global push towards clean energy solutions.

IGE, known for its mammoth Arrowsmith hydrogen project in Western Australia, is committed to producing only “renewable green hydrogen,” as CEO Stephen Gauld emphasizes. By joining forces with Axpo, the company is taking its expertise overseas to develop the Valle Peligna project in Abruzzo, Italy.

As part of Italy’s ambitious plan to create localized hydrogen ecosystems, the Valle Peligna project will utilize a 30MW electrolyser powered by a 45MW solar farm. This innovative setup will produce around 12 tonnes of green hydrogen per day, specifically targeting hard-to-abate industrial and mobility sectors in the surrounding Corfinio area.

The project is expected to have a significant environmental impact, producing 4,200 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, displacing around 18 million liters of diesel and preventing an estimated 67,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

The project may also include a hydrogen refueling station, potentially serving back-to-base operations and even contributing to the Trans-European Transport Network, a key EU initiative promoting clean transportation infrastructure.

“Partnering with Switzerland’s largest renewable energy producer will continue to build the confidence of our stakeholders across the globe,” said Gauld, highlighting the project’s broader impact. “This collaboration not only signifies IGE’s commitment to fighting climate change but also underscores our dedication to creating jobs and a sustainable future for communities embracing green energy.”

This landmark partnership between IGE and Axpo demonstrates the growing momentum behind green hydrogen technology and its potential to revolutionize clean energy production and usage worldwide. As the Valle Peligna project progresses, it will be closely watched by industries and governments alike, eager to see the positive impact it can create.
