Ashes series: Indigenous Australian bowler Scott Boland debut in Melbourne huge for host

Australian test captain Patrick Commins announced that Victorian fast bowler Scott Boland would give his debut against England in a third test match. He is the only second player with Indigenous Australian heritage to play for the men’s test team after Jason Gillespie. The match will be played at his home ground in Melbourne. Before, Faith Thomas and Ashleigh Gardner have played for women’s tests for Australia. Commins expressed his feelings over the decision and said, ‘’ It’s huge, Dizzy (Gillespie) was the first. That’s huge. In Australia, we have a rich history of 50,000 or 60,000 years, and it’s great that’s started to be reflected in our team.’’

He added, ‘’ He’s excited obviously, he’s dreamed to wear the baggy green, but also a packed MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), Boxing Day, and it doesn’t get any better.’’’

Captain Commins himself was out of the match, however, due to covid-19 restrictions Michael Neser and Jhye Richardson were dropped. And the captain is back again. Australian fitness staff is monitoring the quick turnaround by both the players in all five matches. Meanwhile, Commins said, ‘’Jhye is pretty sore, He’s got a small leg injury which is nothing major, but we thought rather than risking him we’d give him a week off.’’

MCG specialist About Scott Boland

And MCG specialist had already considered Boland before the series. They wanted to give him a chance particularly in SCG (Sydney cricket ground. They believe, he is well suited and his record speaking for itself in domestic cricket. The two big factors in his selection were being fresher and also being a great performer straight away. MCG specialist said, ‘’ The first thing you’ve got to wrap your head around playing at MCG is that you’re going to have a bowl a lot of overs more often than not. He does that well. The shield match out here they won against New South Wales I think he bowled 50 overs for the game.’’

Though, Scott Boland is not a huge swing bowler. Similarly, MCG doesn’t have a lot of swing blowing, He is just well suited to the environment. And ask a lot of questions. Meanwhile, talking about Swing bowler Pattinson, Commins said that Pattinson was content. He added, ‘’ I think he knew that in a five-test Ashes he was just about next cab off the rank. We always though there would be an opportunity for him. But he knew all that. He weighed up his decision and he made the right one for him. He’s happy.’’
