Australian Signals Directorate aims to create cyber security hubs in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane. The federal budget allocates $9.9 billion to boost ASD’s offensive and defensive capabilities. Though, it was criticized for its plan to introduce new cyber hubs. Over the criticism, General Rachel Noble told the senate that it will allow cyber spy agency to tap into a wider talent pool.
Criticism response
Addressing the critics Rachel said, ‘’ at the moment, given our footprint is largely in Canberra, to be willing to join ASD, not only do you need to obtain a security clearance. But you also need to be willing to move to Canberra.’’
REDSPICE budget funding allows offering people ongoing roles in three states including Melbourne, Perth and Canberra. Moreover, acting deputy director for Corporate and capability Dale Furse said while ASD is currently working to identify the hubs, it is expected it will continue online in the next three years. He said, ‘’ we are looking at finalising (hubs in Melbourne and Brisbane). Furthermore, having them available in the financial year 2024-25’’.
The bulk of new staff to join ASD
Noble said that even without the hubs, she is confident that ASD could add further staff to its book. The total staff could be 1900.
“She said the cyber spy agency had received “9000 applications for jobs” in 2021. There were currently 700 people in the “pipeline”.
“That is, they’ve passed the selection process, are deemed to have skills that we can utilize in ASD and are waiting to onboard and join our organisations,” she said.
So, it is not ASD that seems to have an issue, in the way that other experts have so described, in attracting people with the right skills to join our organisations.”
Moreover, ASD needs engineers, data scientists, analytics, ICT people, linguists, HR people, Policy people, security, compliance, psychologists, and lawyers. She added, “We need a vast array of different skills that will make up that 1900 to deliver REDSPICE. These jobs will be available for application between 2022-23 and 2023-24.
