The ANZ Banking Group is developing new career paths for engineers that link advancement possibilities to their “mastery” of skills and subject-matter expertise rather than their capacity to lead teams.
Tim Hogarth, chief technology officer at FST Media, said that the traditional career path in a bank was to work one’s way up from the branches to regional and possibly central management.
He did point out that motivation for engineers frequently comes from sources other than a road to management.
Engineers aren’t often motivated by leading other engineers, according to Hogarth.
Additionally, there is a certain area of engineering where mastery is the driving force.
According to Hogarth, the bank is set to introduce new career advancement opportunities for its engineers.
In place of expecting employees to advance through positions with increasing management responsibilities, he added, “We’re going to be building a new career model for our engineers where we instead expect people to progress through an enhanced level of mastery.”
Domains including software, infrastructure, cloud, data, security, site dependability, support, and quality will be the basis for mastery.
According to the new career path, engineers “won’t be put in a position where they have to necessarily manage people” as they advance to more senior positions.
People who are just beginning their engineering careers “will come to ANZ to learn, and people who are at the midpoint and beyond their engineering careers will be at ANZ to teach,” was Hogarth’s goal in creating the environment and culture.
“We feel strongly and passionately about this jointly held information.”
Although it hasn’t yet decided on a method to enable and achieve it, the Australian public sector is going through a process that is very similar to the one that ANZ is going through.
