Anthony Albanese’s Unfulfilled Election Commitment

In a move that has stirred both anticipation and controversy,Anthony Albanese has announced a “deep inquiry” into the handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the decision has not been without its fair share of criticism, as some accuse Albanese of backpedaling on his promise to hold a royal commission in order to appease Labor state premiers.

Albanese’s decision to opt for an inquiry rather than a royal commission has raised immediate concerns among various stakeholders. The main bone of contention lies in whether this inquiry will possess the requisite powers and authority to effectively investigate the pandemic’s management, particularly concerning state lockdowns and school closures.

Leading up to the federal election, Mr. Albanese frequently discussed the concept of an investigation, occasionally leaving room for ambiguity regarding whether it might take the form of an inquiry or a royal commission.

In January 2022, Mr. Albanese asserted, ‘There’s no doubt that an evaluation will be necessary. As we approach the conclusion of the pandemic, we should contemplate whether it should take the shape of a Royal Commission or some variant of an inquiry; nevertheless, it is an imperative step that must be taken.

The former Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, had previously expressed his willingness to collaborate with an inquiry. However, he emphasized the importance of granting it judicial powers to compel both present and former state officials to testify as witnesses.

Speaking to The Australian Financial Review, he remarked, “Australia’s Covid response, though not flawless, is acknowledged as among the world’s finest, safeguarding lives and livelihoods.”

“During the pandemic, we instituted a continuous Senate inquiry to ensure real-time transparency, accountability, and the ongoing identification of valuable lessons.”
