Amazon is constructing a state-of-the-art satellite processing facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with an impressive budget of US$120 million ($178 million). This facility is a crucial component of Amazon’s ambitious Kuiper project, which involves the deployment of 3,200 low Earth-orbiting satellites to create a global broadband internet network.
The Kuiper network will be a significant competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink, founded by Elon Musk, and is set to complement Amazon’s robust web services offerings. Spanning 100,000 square feet, the Florida facility will house 50 employees and serve as the final destination for Amazon’s Kuiper satellites after their production at the primary plant in Redmond, Washington.
Within the ten-story-tall room, the satellites will be expertly fitted into rocket payload fairings, the protective shells surrounding the satellites during their journey atop the rocket. Construction of the facility began in January and is expected to be completed by late 2024, with the first batch of satellites set to arrive for processing in the first half of 2025.
Amazon has an ambitious timeline, aiming to launch its first mass-produced satellites by early 2024. The plan is to deploy half of the satellite network into orbit by 2026, in accordance with the requirements set by US regulators. To facilitate these launches, Amazon has secured 77 heavy-lift rocket launch contracts worth billions of dollars, primarily from United Launch Alliance, a joint venture of Boeing and Lockheed, as well as Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos.
The company intends to launch a few prototype satellites into space by the end of the current year, with the first mass-produced satellites set for launch in 2024. Testing of the service will commence in that year, targeting corporate and government customers.
While the project is eligible for state grant funds for transportation-related initiatives, as offered by Space Florida, a state-funded entity promoting space business in Florida, Amazon has not yet received any funding under this program.
