Google is integrating artificial intelligence into the US broadcast of the Paris Olympics, enabling sports commentators to utilize AI for explaining competitions. This collaboration was announced in conjunction with NBCUniversal and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee.
As the official search AI partner for Team USA, Google marks a first-time partnership with the sports nonprofit. This initiative coincides with NBCUniversal’s efforts to modernize its Olympic coverage, aiming to engage viewers who prefer online clips over live television.
NBCUniversal plans to introduce personalized, AI-generated daily recaps narrated by AI versions of notable figures like sports commentator Al Michaels. Additionally, during daytime and primetime coverage, anchors will employ Google Search’s AI overviews to address questions about various sports, such as the significance of pool-lane assignments in swimming.
Google’s AI overviews offer written responses to search queries without requiring a website link click. Comedian Leslie Jones, serving as a commentator, will use Google’s Gemini AI model to familiarize herself with new sports and entertain viewers.
The Paris Olympics are set to commence on July 26.
