Recently, a United State Supreme court judge urged us to be cautious of AI. It’s not far in reshaping legal fields. John Roberts, supreme court judge said that the technology has transformed how lawyers and judges take their work.
The statement is given in a 13 page report. He said artificial intelligence has the potential to assist courts to resolve cases quickly and cheaply. However, it also raises privacy concerns and its inability to replicate human discretion.
He believes judicial work, particularly trials, will be significantly affected by AI. Meanwhile, these technologies are prone to create fictitious content such as ‘’Hallucination’’. The statements of the Chief Justice is one of the most important discussions in today’s time as AI is influencing the law. He believes that we must be cautious of using AI.
Lawyers have presented non-existed cases in court papers
The judge also mentioned examples of how lawyers have presented non-existed cases in court papers and it’s such a bad idea. Though, he did not go into the details about these instances, except saying that these phenomena have made headlines this year.
Last month, a court in New Orleans made news by saying lawyers might need to follow new rules when using computer programs like ChatGPT for writing court papers.
The new rule, if accepted, would mean lawyers have to tell the court if they used a computer program to write their papers, and make sure a person checked everything was correct before sending it in.
