According to a report by Meta, the social media giant has identified several instances of malware that exploit the public’s interest in ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot, to deceive users into downloading harmful apps and browser extensions. Meta likened this trend to cryptocurrency scams and said it had discovered around 10 malware families and over 1,000 malicious links since March 2023. In some cases, the malware was designed to deliver ChatGPT’s functioning while also distributing abusive files. Meta’s executives, including its CISO Guy Rosen, said that the company was preparing its defenses against possible abuses related to generative AI technologies like ChatGPT. They also acknowledged that generative AI could make it easier to propagate online disinformation campaigns, and that bad actors may try to use these technologies to accelerate their activities.
