The Australian Bureau of Statistics is on the hunt for a new information and communications technology chief, as Steve Hamilton departs to take on a new role within the federal government.
The agency put the call out for Hamilton’s replacement to fill the spot in the combined role of CIO and general manager of the technology and security division.
The ABS said on LinkedIn the position will be responsible for “all ICT functions and activities, which includes an increased focus on information security”.
The CIO will join the ABS at a crucial juncture as data availability and use keep growing, giving the ABS more chances to offer timely insights on Australia’s shifting society and economy, the spokesperson added.
In order to support ABS activities going forward, including the 2026 Census, the general manager will also be responsible for the strategic development of ICT.
Hamilton has served as the ABS’s CIO for the “last five years,” according to the spokeswoman, working on numerous important projects.
The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey, the ABS’s reaction to additional data needs brought on by the COVID-19 epidemic, and the smooth completion of the 2021 Census were all made possible thanks to Steve Hamilton’s five years as the ABS CIO.
Steve is leaving the ABS to accept a senior technology leadership position with the federal government.
Hamilton spent eight years as the Australian Taxation Office’s deputy commissioner for the enterprise solutions and technology group, according to his staff bio.
He was in charge of the ATO’s strategy, architecture, security, and planning, as well as its e-commerce and web platforms. He also oversaw the organization’s digital delivery capabilities.
