EU Gatekeeper Status: Microsoft and Google Embrace New Rules for Interoperability

Microsoft and Google have opted not to challenge the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which designates them as gatekeepers and mandates interoperability among their services. The DMA, aimed at Big Tech companies, includes provisions for messaging app interoperability and user choice in pre-installed apps. While Google has chosen to work with EU regulators, Microsoft has accepted its gatekeeper designation and pledged cooperation in meeting DMA obligations for Windows and LinkedIn.

Google’s Strategy of Collaboration, Microsoft’s Cooperation Commitment

Google, facing increased regulations under the DMA for various services, including Android, maps, and search, has chosen a collaborative approach with EU regulators. Microsoft, acknowledging its gatekeeper status, commits to working with the European Commission to fulfill DMA obligations. The industry observes Google’s strategy of cooperation as a strategic move, considering its dominant position. Other tech companies like TikTok and Meta may still file challenges, while Apple is reportedly considering a challenge to its gatekeeper designation.

TikTok and Meta May Follow, Apple Considers Response

As Microsoft and Google accept their gatekeeper designations under the DMA, attention turns to potential challenges from other tech giants. TikTok and Meta, with services like Facebook, Instagram, Marketplace, and WhatsApp falling under gatekeeper status, may consider filing challenges. While TikTok has previously expressed disagreement with the designation, Meta and other companies are yet to announce their stance. Apple, reportedly contemplating a challenge, remains silent on its response to the gatekeeper designation.
