Securing Australia’s Water Future: National Hydrogeological Inventory Unveiled

The Australian Government is taking steps to secure the country’s water resources by creating the National Hydrogeological Inventory. Developed by Geoscience Australia, this inventory aims to map Australia’s major groundwater-bearing basins and geological provinces, providing valuable information for decision-making and future investment in groundwater.

Groundwater is essential for national water security, and this initiative will help enhance understanding of groundwater systems. It also aligns with efforts to better understand and protect the environment in the face of climate change.

The inventory will provide improved access to information on shallow and deep groundwater systems supporting various water supplies, including regional and remote community water supplies, urban water supply, and ecosystems.

Groundwater geologist Dr. Steve Lewis explained that understanding groundwater recharge processes, the process by which water moves downward through the Earth’s surface to become groundwater, is crucial for managing water resources sustainably.

Studies, like those in the Great Artesian Basin, help comprehend how water enters the ground to recharge aquifers, ensuring a balanced approach to groundwater management.

The National Hydrogeological Inventory will consolidate these studies to offer a comprehensive view of Australia’s groundwater resources, strengthening the nation’s water security and environmental preservation efforts.
