TikTok is reportedly testing a monthly subscription service that would eliminate advertisements from the platform. The service is being tested at a price of $4.99 per month in an English-speaking market outside the United States. While TikTok has not disclosed the specific market where the test is taking place, it is noted that the test is small-scale and does not guarantee a global rollout.
TikTok currently displays personalised adverts for users aged 18 and older. Several other platforms, including YouTube and Twitter (formerly X), already offer ad-free subscriptions for a monthly fee.
Meta Considers Ad-Free Subscriptions for EU Users
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly exploring the possibility of offering ad-free subscriptions to users in the European Union (EU). The move is in response to the EU’s advertising rules, and users who opt out of personalised adverts may be charged around €10 to €13 per month to use Facebook and Instagram without personalised advertising on desktop and mobile.
Meta, which has been facing increased regulatory scrutiny, stated that it believes in the value of free services supported by personalised ads and is seeking ways to comply with evolving regulatory requirements.
Consumer Response to Ad-Free Social Media Subscription Models
Some experts believe that younger audiences accustomed to using social media platforms for free may be hesitant to pay for an ad-free experience. Users have become accustomed to considering social platforms as free services. While advertisements on social media platforms can be disruptive, they are generally accepted by users as part of the experience.
The success of ad-free subscription models may depend on factors like the pricing structure, the quality of the ad-free experience, and the willingness of users to pay for a service they have traditionally used for free.
