The European Commission is embarking on an initiative to assess the risks associated with four critical technologies. These technologies include semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technologies, and biotechnologies like vaccines and genome sequencing.
This assessment is a vital part of the European Union’s economic security strategy. It was unveiled in June. It aligns with the concerns shared by countries like the United States and Australia regarding the potential weaponization of these technologies.
Risk Assessment and Mitigation
The European Commission will collaborate with EU member states to conduct comprehensive risk assessments for these four critical technologies. These assessments are expected to be completed by the end of the year. Following the assessments, the Commission plans to take proactive measures to mitigate the identified risks.
These measures could include implementing export controls and establishing partnerships with like-minded allies to ensure the responsible use of these technologies.
