In a bid to alleviate the financial burden faced by many residents, the Chris Minns government of New South Wales has unveiled its first budget since its decisive election victory in March.
The budget, which was announced on Tuesday, includes a range of measures aimed at providing targeted support to households grappling with the rising cost of living. One of the most significant initiatives is the provision of energy rebates of up to $350 for eligible households, with the program extended for another financial year from July 1, 2024.
The decision to provide this cash boost couldn’t have come at a better time. Across the country, Australians are grappling with soaring costs in various aspects of their daily lives, including energy bills. The ongoing economic challenges, exacerbated by the global pandemic, have put immense pressure on households.
The New South Wales government’s proactive response to this issue demonstrates its commitment to the welfare of its residents.
The family energy rebate is set to rise, increasing from $180 to $250, while the seniors’ energy rebate will also see an increase from $200 to $250. Additionally, both the low-income household rebate and medical energy rebates are poised to receive a boost, increasing from $285 to $350.
Penny Sharpe, the Energy Minister of New South Wales, emphasised that this targeted support is intended to assist those facing the greatest financial challenges.
She stated, “The NSW Government remains committed to fulfilling its pledge to offer assistance to families and households struggling with energy expenses. We are acutely aware that many individuals are experiencing financial difficulties. The added funding will have a substantial impact on some of our community’s most vulnerable members.”
According to the budget projections, New South Wales is anticipated to achieve a modest surplus of $844 million in the fiscal year 2024-25, following a deficit of $7.8 billion in the current financial year.
A significant allocation of funds in this budget was earmarked for salary increases for public service workers. The New South Wales government has pledged a total of $3.6 billion for salary hikes of up to 4.5 percent in the public sector.
