In a significant development, Qualcomm, a leading designer of modem chips for mobile data networks, has inked a fresh deal with Apple. This agreement secures Qualcomm as the supplier of 5G chips to Apple until at least 2026, marking an extension of their collaboration.
An Ongoing Partnership
The partnership between Qualcomm and Apple initially began in 2019 after the resolution of a protracted legal dispute between the two tech giants. This 5G chip supply agreement was set to conclude in 2022, coinciding with the latest iPhone release.
While the precise financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed, Qualcomm has stated that the terms are “similar” to the previous arrangement. As per the deal, Qualcomm commits to providing Apple with 5G chips for each annual iPhone release until 2026.
Apple’s dedication to in-house chip production continues, with ongoing development in modem technology. In 2019, the tech giant invested $1 billion to acquire Intel’s modem unit. Although Apple is progressing in this direction, the speed and scale of implementing its own chips in iPhones remain uncertain.
Staying Competitive and Reinforcing Supply Chains
The extended partnership with Qualcomm serves as a strategic move for Apple, particularly in light of challenges it faces in the Chinese market. By solidifying its supply chains with established partners, Apple can navigate these challenges while continuing to innovate in-house.
Qualcomm’s projections suggest that by 2026, only a fifth of Apple’s iPhones will feature its chips. However, history has shown that these projections can evolve, as was the case in 2021 when Qualcomm’s chips were featured in all iPhone 14 models, despite earlier conservative estimates.
The extension of the Qualcomm-Apple collaboration underscores the importance of stable and reliable chip supply chains in the ever-evolving world of smartphone technology.
