In response to the increasing prevalence of AI-generated synthetic content, Google is implementing new rules for political ads. These rules, set to take effect in November, aim to address concerns about the potential for AI to supercharge disinformation campaigns. This policy update builds upon Google’s existing ad policies, which already prohibit the manipulation of digital media to deceive or mislead people regarding political, social, or public concerns.
The key change is that election-related ads will be required to prominently disclose the use of “synthetic content” that portrays real or realistic-looking individuals or events. Google suggests using labels such as “this image does not depict real events” or “this video content was synthetically generated” to indicate the presence of such content. The goal is to ensure transparency and prevent the spread of false information that could undermine trust in the election process.
Google’s commitment to transparency in political ads doesn’t stop there. They also require political ads to disclose information about their sponsors and make this information available in an online ads library. These disclosures must be clear and conspicuous, ensuring that viewers can easily identify the source of the ad.
Misuse of AI-generated deepfake technologies
Examples of content that would warrant such labels include synthetic imagery or audio depicting individuals saying or doing things they did not actually do or events that never took place. The move comes as concerns grow about the misuse of AI-generated deepfake technologies.
In addition to the forthcoming rules, Google has stated its ongoing commitment to investing in technology to detect and remove synthetic content. This move aligns with Google’s broader mission to create a safer and more transparent online environment, particularly in the context of political discourse and elections.
By implementing these rules, Google aims to strike a balance between innovation and accountability, ensuring that political ads maintain transparency and integrity in an era of increasingly sophisticated AI technology.
