DoorDash Pays $2 Million Fine for Australian Spam Violations

US-based food delivery service DoorDash has been fined $2.01 million for violating Australian spam regulations by sending over 1 million unsolicited emails and texts to customers and potential drivers. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) revealed that DoorDash had sent more than 566,000 promotional emails to customers who had previously unsubscribed, and over 515,000 texts to prospective drivers without including an unsubscribe option.

The spamming took place between February and October of the previous year. The ACMA launched an investigation after receiving complaints and found that DoorDash had inaccurately labeled messages as factual, while they contained commercial elements aimed at promoting business opportunities. In addition to the fine, DoorDash has committed to a three-year court-enforceable undertaking to enhance its practices and provide regular updates to the regulator.
