Orkney has made history as the first location in the UK to have its mail delivered by drone. The initiative, known as the Orkney I-Port operation, is a collaboration between Royal Mail and drone firm Skyports. It aims to distribute letters and parcels between the islands, enhancing delivery services and overcoming weather and geography-related disruptions.
The drone delivery service operates in partnership with the council’s harbour authority and Loganair. It transports mail from Royal Mail’s Kirkwall delivery office to Stromness, where drones take over to deliver items to Graemsay and Hoy. Postal staff on these islands complete the final stages of the delivery routes.
Initially set to operate for three months, the service has the potential to become a permanent feature due to Orkney’s unique landscape and the close proximity of the islands.
The use of fully electric drones for inter-island delivery brings significant safety benefits, allowing postal workers to navigate between ports without risks associated with traditional transport methods.
Revolutionary impact of drone technology on mail services in remote regions
The inter-island flights are conducted by Skyports using the Speedbird Aero DLV-2 aircraft, capable of carrying payloads of up to 6kg (approximately 13 pounds). The project is funded by the Department for Transport’s Freight Innovation Fund and executed by the Connected Places Catapult.
Chris Paxton, head of drone trials at Royal Mail, expressed pride in the project, emphasizing how the fully electric drones align with the company’s commitment to reducing emissions associated with its operations while providing better connectivity to the remote communities they serve.
Alex Brown, director of Skyports Drone Services, highlighted the revolutionary impact of drone technology on mail services in remote regions. He stressed that it enables more efficient and timely delivery, reducing the need for emissions-producing vehicles.
This drone delivery initiative is a pioneering step towards leveraging advanced technology to enhance logistics and mail services in the UK.
