Optus Launches Call Stop Service to Combat Call-Back Scammers

Optus has introduced a service called Call Stop to protect customers from call-back scammers. The scam typically involves sending victims a text message claiming issues with their bank accounts and providing a phone number for the target to call. The scammer then impersonates the bank to extract financial information from the victim.

Working in collaboration with the Australian Financial Crimes Exchange (AFCX), Optus’ Call Stop blocks calls to numbers identified by the AFCX as associated with scammers. Instead of connecting the caller to the scammer, Optus redirects them to an automated message stating that the number has been reported for scam activities. The customer is advised to visit optus.com.au/CallStop for more information. By implementing this service, Optus aims to protect its customers and raise awareness of scam attempts.

The AFCX, along with its financial institution members, including major banks, has contributed to the implementation of Call Stop by providing scam numbers identified by the banks, which are shared through the exchange.

Leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning investments

Andrew Sheridan, Optus’ Vice President of Regulatory and Public Affairs, emphasized the company’s commitment to combating scams and stated that Call Stop is their latest tool in this battle. The service safeguards customers who have been deceived into dialing a scam number.

In addition to Call Stop, Optus has been actively leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning investments to enhance its efforts against scams. The company reported blocking 320 million scam calls since December 2020 and 80 million scam SMS messages over the past year. Currently, Optus is blocking approximately 5 million scam calls and 10 million scam SMS messages each month.

Optus’ Call Stop service demonstrates the company’s dedication to protecting its customers from fraudulent activities and providing a safer telecommunications experience.
