NAB removes text message links

National Australia Bank (NAB) has implemented a new strategy to distinguish its legitimate customer communications from scams and fraud. In an effort to combat fraudulent activities, NAB will no longer include links in most text messages sent to customers. This initiative is part of the bank’s broader anti-fraud and scam-related projects, with 64 such projects currently underway.

Out of the 112 million messages sent by NAB in 2023, approximately 40 million contained links. Going forward, the bank will direct users to its official channels, such as the website, direct phone calls, or the banking app, for any necessary actions. However, this approach does not currently apply to NAB subsidiaries Ubank, JBWere, and Citi Consumer Bank.

NAB CEO Ross McEwan emphasized the importance of simplifying the identification of legitimate messages from the bank. He advised customers not to click on any unexpected text message containing a link that appears to be from NAB. The goal is to make it more difficult for criminals to deceive hard-working Australians and steal money.

In addition to removing links from messages, NAB has implemented other anti-scam measures. This includes payment prompts to minimize the risk of customers falling victim to transfer scams or making mistaken payments. Similar initiatives have been adopted by other major banks in Australia, such as Westpac and Commonwealth Bank, which have implemented transaction and payment method verifications to prevent fraudulent and erroneous transfers.

McEwan emphasized the need for a collaborative approach across all industries to combat scams. He welcomed the government’s national anti-scam center, which recently launched its first task force targeting SMS sender ID registry services. While NAB is taking proactive measures, McEwan acknowledged that scammers are part of transnational organized crime groups and will continue to seek new ways to defraud people. He encouraged all Australians to remain vigilant, curious, and educated to protect themselves from scams.
