Michael Kardaris Appointed as First CIO of NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission

Michael Kardaris, the assistant secretary of biosecurity digital reform at the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry, has been selected as the first Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Quality and Safeguards Commission.

Reporting to the NDIS Commission’s Chief Operating Officer, Lisa Pulko, Kardaris will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the NDIS Commission’s ICT strategy. This strategy encompasses various initiatives, including the replacement of the telephony system, establishment of a scalable data lake, and preparation of the second phase business case for the NDIS Commission’s data and regulatory transformation (DART) project.

The NDIS Commission aims to enhance its ICT capabilities in line with its data and digital roadmap. The roadmap outlines goals such as streamlining participant interactions, improving interfaces for accessing external information, and enhancing intelligence-gathering capabilities for risk identification. These efforts align with the Commission’s vision of informed decision-making and maturity as a regulator.

The Commission’s corporate plan for 2022-23 highlights its focus on developing data collection and utilization capabilities, leading to improved performance reporting based on enhanced data availability.

Prior to his appointment as CIO, Kardaris served as the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry’s assistant secretary for biosecurity digital reform. He also gained extensive experience in the global IT operations division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
