Australians are being encouraged to switch from using natural gas in their households to electric-powered appliances and installations if the country hopes to meet its 2050 zero-net obligation. The Grattan Institute’s recent report, Getting Off Gas, has revealed that the cost of running electric powered households are cheaper than gas powered ones, as well as being better for public health.
The report has called on state and federal government administrations to set a date to end the availability of natural gas. Over the next thirty years, the aim is to change from gas into electricity or renewable energy sources.
“Governments must take action to create more momentum towards making residential areas all-electric, considering the fact that new homes are constantly being added to the gas network daily,” the report said.
Australia currently produces most of its electricity with coal and natural gas, and an increase in the cost of these resources could drive up customer bills. Switching to electric powered household items, for example, could save customers from being exposed to expensive rise in utilities cost.
Grattan is recommending the prohibition of new gas connections to houses, stores, and small companies, in addition to providing assistance to Australians as they plan to transition their residences to electric power.
