Apple Entry into Augmented Reality(AR) with Vision Pro

Apple has announced its entry into the augmented reality (AR) space with the unveiling of the Vision Pro, an AR headset set to launch early next year. Priced at $3,499 (AU$5,287), the Vision Pro is Apple’s most ambitious and risky product since the iPhone. It will compete directly with Meta’s line of mixed and virtual reality devices dominating the AR/VR market. The headset allows users to interact with content using eye selection, finger tapping, and gentle flicking gestures. Notably, it features an exterior display that shows the user’s eyes to people in the real world, emphasizing a connection to those around them.

The Vision Pro’s exterior screen goes dark when the user is fully immersed in a virtual world but reactivates to show both the user and an approaching person when interaction is desired. The headset has a two-hour battery life but requires an external battery or wall plug for power. Apple’s human interface chief, Alan Dye, emphasized that the Vision Pro keeps users connected to their surroundings and allows them to see and be seen by others.

Apple’s AR headset employs a new chip called R1, designed to process sensor information in an incredibly short timeframe. The company has collaborated with Adobe, Microsoft, Unity, and Walt Disney’s Disney+ streaming service to optimize their apps for the device. The announcement sparked a 14% surge in Unity’s shares.

Sony Group and ByteDance have also recently released VR devices

While Apple introduced several new products and features at the event, including MacBook Air updates and improved iOS software, the Vision Pro stole the spotlight. Industry observers are now closely watching how Apple’s foray into the virtual reality market aligns with Meta’s vision for a metaverse. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has outlined a future where headsets enable people to meet virtually for work, play, and socializing. Sony Group and ByteDance-owned Pico have also recently released virtual reality devices, contributing to the growing market. According to research firm IDC, 8.8 million headsets were sold last year.

Apple’s move into AR indicates its determination to innovate and remain at the forefront of technology. With the Vision Pro, the company aims to provide users with a new way to experience digital content, blending the virtual and physical worlds seamlessly.
