An urgent recall has been issued for an Aldi Australia seafood product, due to elevated histamine levels that could cause consumers to suffer from food-borne illness if they consume it. The product, OceanRise Anchovy Fillets In Olive Oil and OceanRise Anchovy Fillets In Olive Oil with Chilli, are sold in 100g packages and are available at Aldi stores across the country.
The recall is being conducted voluntarily by the supplier and has been issued due to the detection of elevated levels of histamine in the product. Histamine is a natural chemical signalling molecule that exists in various types of seafood.
When consumed in large quantities, however, it can produce intense symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, facial flushing, rashes, nausea, headaches and vomiting.
Aldi is urging consumers not to eat the anchovies and to take them back to the point of purchase for a complete reimbursement, as all date codes of the product have been recalled and are available in all Aldi stores across Australia.
