EU legislative committees approve stricter draught AI regulations

New rules governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have moved a step closer to becoming law in the European Union after lawmakers voted to approve tougher draft legislation. The EU’s AI Act is anticipated to become the world’s first comprehensive legislation around AI, including rules on facial recognition and biometric surveillance. Under the proposals, AI tools will be categorised according to risk level, with different obligations imposed on companies and governments depending on the category. The bill will go to a plenary vote of the European Parliament in June, with final terms agreed in talks involving representatives of the Parliament, the Council of the EU, and the European Commission.
