The Australian Federal Police (AFP) has announced a restructure in response to the growing threat posed by cybercrime. Commissioner Reece Kershaw has announced a decision. Crime and national security responsibilities will be split. The reason for this is the increasing complexity of cybercrime and other tech-enabled criminal activity.
As part of the restructure, four executives will support Kershaw. Ian McCartney is the Deputy Commissioner for National Security. Meanwhile, Neil Gaughan is the Chief Police Officer of ACT Policing. Grant Nicholls is the Acting Deputy Commissioner for Crime. Additionally, Lisa Gale is the Deputy Commissioner for International and Specialist Capabilities.
The AFP has tasked Nicholls with developing and managing crime and cybercrime strategies. While Assistant Commissioner Scott Lee will lead the cyber command, addressing the “entrenched and growing threat” posed by cybercriminals.
Meanwhile, McCartney, who formerly had responsibility for cybercrime as well as transnational crime and counter-terrorism, will now focus on national security matters as well as aviation, protection, and security. Gale, only the second woman to reach deputy commissioner status in the AFP, will also support Kershaw in her new role.
In addition to cybercrime, the restructure will address legislative frameworks. Focusing on national security laws, and the AFP’s expanding remit. We expect that the appointment of these executives will enhance the AFP’s ability to respond to the growing threats of cybercrime. Also, help recognize other tech-enabled criminal activity.
