Here we sit down with Simon, to know a bit more about his journey as an entrepreneur.

Q. Tell us a little more about your journey as an entrepreneur – how did you get started? What inspired you?

Simon: After retiring from the Private Security sector after almost a decade of faithful service, due to a workplace accident I had witnessed I spent several months in hospital recovering.

Once I left the hospital I had to rebuild my life as I wasn’t allowed to go back to my former role, so I went to get my Forklift Licence. After a couple of months, I still couldn’t find any work, so I decided to utilise the trade skills I earned working with my late father that I gained working in the family construction company.

Out of the blue, a former client named Alan recommended me to his neighbour to do some painting on her residence and it began from there.

The company name Samson Property Services is inspired by my late father, as in his last few months before succumbing to pancreatic cancer he helped me build a brick retaining wall in my front yard.

Q. What’s one thing in your routine that you do consistently that has made a huge difference in your personal or business life?

Simon: Instead of starting at the crack of dawn, I usually begin my day at 9:00 am and I wake up fully rested allowing me to work all day long.

Q. Who are your mentors and inspiration? and what knowledge or insight did they give to you that was valuable?

Simon: My father as mentioned is the inspiration behind this company. He and my 3 brothers taught me my trade skills, in particular painting skills.

My father always said you will always be employed as a tradesman and truth be told he was right. There is an abundance of work out there, you just have to put in some time and effort and more importantly, do a great job that exceeds expectations!

Q. What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

Simon: Landing a client who ended up spending in excess of just over $13,000 with my business despite us not being his first choice.

Also asked to paint a multi-coloured feature wall by a client to be featured in their rumpus room. I managed to do it using lots of 3M tape and a heck of a lot of patience. I still think this is the best example of my paintwork.

The client was that impressed they offered me more work throughout the house and also contemplated paying me to travel interstate to paint their other rental properties.

Q. How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful?

Simon: We use Hi Pages for our leads, plus we advertise on Facebook, Community Noticeboards, Leaflet Drops and ideally Referrals and Word of Mouth.

Q. What has been your biggest failures or challenges?

Simon: Having to repaint an entire property as the client decided to change the colour on a whim just as we had almost finished painting the last few areas that weren’t finished.

Q. How did this failure, or apparent failure, set you up for later success?

Simon: Implementation of new rules within our business to reduce the likelihood of this happening again.

Q. If someone was to create a TV show about you, what would it be about and what would it be called?

Simon: Aren’t there enough trade shows on TV like Better Homes and Gardens and The Block? Haha.
