First cyber ambassador for Australia departs

Tobias Feakin, Australia’s first cyber ambassador, has announced his retirement.

2016 saw Feakin’s initial appointment to the position. At the time, he declared that fighting global cybercrime and opposing censorship will be his main priorities.

Feakin said on LinkedIn that he would be leaving his position as ambassador for critical technology and cyber matters at the end of 2022.

“I was the first person to hold this title when I started in this position. Now, any nation that shares our views, including some with whom we don’t always agree, has an equivalent position, Feakin stated.

With the $100 million the Australian government has invested, Australia is now “delivering over 100 such initiatives that achieve significant economic and security outcomes in the region with our Indo-Pacific allies.” “he continued.

“The stage is prepared for a successor to carry on Australia’s leadership in this field and take advantage of chances to expand it.”

Feakin served as the Australian Strategic Policy Institute’s first director of the International Cyber Policy Centre before taking on the position of ambassador.

He was also a key figure in creating the position of ambassador for vital technology and cyber affairs as part of the federal government’s cyber security plan.
